At least 64 people were killed and over 300 wounded on Wednesday after a powerful car bomb rocked a diplomatic district in central Kabul, according to the Afghan Ministry of the Interior.
Dozens of the wounded were reported to be in critical conditions.
The blast went off roughly around eight thirty (local time) at a place close to the German Embassy.
The explosion occurred at the start of working day in the Afghan capital city, where many people fell the powerful shock.
The explosives were planted in a water tank vehicle.
No individual or group has so far claimed responsibility for the car bomb attack.
"I walked into my office a few minutes before the explosion. The explosion took place the minute we sat down. After the explosion, we hurried downstairs and saw all the things damaged. Many buildings were badly destroyed," said Rahmin, a cameraman with 1TV in Afghanistan.
Police have cordoned off the explosion area, since that area is not far from the presidential residence. There are helicopters hovering in the sky. Local residents are worrying about another attack.
"Preliminary statistics showed there are 50 causalities in the explosion. This is a car bomb attack, and another 30 vehicles have been damaged. We have started an investigation into the disaster," said Najib Danish, deputy spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior.
Latest available figures show more than 50 vehicles were destroyed and dozens of buildings around the blast site were damaged. A three-story supermarket and a travel agency some 200 meters away from the blast center had their frontal glasses totally shattered by the shock waves.
