Innervation of the larynx:
Mainly by the branches of the vagus nerve: superior laryngeal nerve and recurrent laryngeal nerve.
== Superior laryngeal nerve -- External and internal branch.
Internal branch -- Has sensory innervation above the vocal cord.
External branch -- Innervate only one laryngeal muscle: cricothyroid.
Recurrent laryngeal nerve: Motor innervation -- to all laryngeal muscle except for cricothyroid.
Sensory innervation to the larynx below the vocal cord
Clinical relevance: When performing thyroidectomy the surgeon must be careful in ligating the superior thyroid artery because the superior laryngeal nerve courses along with it and may become damage. If the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve is damaged then cricothyroid muscle is paralyzed.
