Here's the "Today in Music History" spot (sponsored by Sinutab) that was recorded on March 20, 1989. On that date in 1971, Janis Joplin's recording of "Me and Bobby McGee" became the second posthumously released single to reach #1 on the music charts (the first being Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay"; released after his death in a 1967 plane crash), which Joplin had finished recording on October 1, 1970; just 3 days before her death from an accidental heroin overdose.
Interesting note of trivia: While most associated with Joplin, her version of the song (co-written by Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster) was actually a cover; as the original version was recorded by country singer Roger Miller, with other versions preceding Joplin's including Kenny Rogers and The First Edition as well as Kristofferson recording his own version of the song.
