The 6/8 feel has always felt right to me, it's always felt natural. So when I discovered this play along / book by Simon Phillips years ago when it first came out (1993), this was one of the tracks that got plenty of play throughs. The track has a complexity to its simplicity, and it was worth a re-visit and a review all these years to pull out weaknesses I have playing this feel. It’s easy to overplay it and lose the almost ‘trance-like’ groove. Little embellishments and fills were hesitant, and the kick feels weak at times. At least I know what I need to work on and thanks to this track. But of course there’s positives too; I’m discovering more tricks/skills recording drums. I also nailed my fave bit of the track; the metric modulation before the outro. I’m also noticing improvement in my ability to lock into a click a bit more, and not second guess it specially after fills. Constant improvement.
