The Popocatepetl volcano near Mexico City emitted incandescent lava fragments and gas.
Video of the volcano's activity was recorded by a nearby permanent camera mounted by Mexican TV network Televisa.
Mexico's National Disaster Prevention Centre (CENAPRED) said the volcano registered 99 emissions in the last 24 hours and tremors for the past 12 hours.
The CENAPRED website said a Yellow Phase 2 alert remained in place. Authorities have restricted access to within a radius of 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) from the crater and are asking nearby residents to be aware of official reports.
Popocatepetl sits roughly halfway between Mexico City and the city of Puebla. Some 25 million people live within a 100- kilometre (60-mile) radius of the volcano.
'Popo', as it's commonly known, has put out small eruptions of ash almost daily since a round of eruptive activity began in 1994.
Popocatepetl means "smoking mountain" in an indigenous language.
