Border Radio: the cultural phenomenon of high-powered American "outlaw" radio stations on the Mexican soil that exerted a peculiar, mesmerizing influence on American music, religion, advertising, politics, medicine, and sexual mores. --By Felipe Von Toggenberg, Archvist, Border Radio Research Institute
Born in the Wild West in 1927 Dallas Turner, aka Nevada Slim, grew up listening to border radio cowboy songs on ranches in Oregon and Nevada. As a teen, he headed for Texas, met boyhood idol Cowboy Slim Rinehart, and got his first border blaster job as a yodeling pitchman. Dallas remained on the great Mexican border stations until their demise in 1986. In recent years, his performances have included the Smithsonian, the National Cowboy Gathering in Elko, and the American Roots Music Festival at Lincoln Center.
Turner, was the hit of Texas Folklife's 2005 production, "Border Radio: The Big Jukebox in the Sky." He'll regale listeners with stories of his life and times as the yodeling "Roving Ranger" and "king of border pitchmen."
