The Origin of the "Real" Harlem Shake
As far as the origin of the Harlem Shake is concerned, no one's really sure, but we're sure that the kids in Harlem, New York City have everything to do with this dance. The Harlem Shake went viral on YouTube in February 2013. More than 10 years ago, the Harlem Shake dance premiered in a music video on Diddy's Bad Boy label with artist G. Dep's 2001 song "Let's Get It," then on G-Dep's follow-up song, "Special Delivery." Since then, the dance was caught on songs like Eve's "Who's That Girl," Nelly and Kelly Rowland's "Dilemma," Bow Wow's "Take Ya Home," and DJ Webstar's "Chicken Noodle Soup."
Up-and-coming producer Baauer is getting all the credit for the craze. His EDM song "Harlem Shake" broke a record this week, debuting at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. He said theat he started doing the dance in 1981. Though Baauer briefly lived in Harlem, the song was partly inspired by a lyric from Philadelphia rapper Plastic Little's 2001 track "Miller Time."
Here's some snippets of the Harlem Shake.
Enjoy!
