Canon R100 4K Cinematic
I was lucky enough to get my early hands on the Canon R100. So this is the most affordable RF camera you could get on the market. The retail price is USD$479. But does that mean cheap must be bad?
For video shooters, I reckon you should definitely consider spending a little more for the R50. As this camera has an old sensor and the processor like the M50. So when shooting 4K it has a massive crop of 2.56x. Meaning a 50mm lens works out around 128mm. So if you wanna use this camera on a gimbal and you want a wide angle lens. Then it might be hard. And also 4K will no longer have the amazing Dual Pixel AF auto focus. Just like the previous M50. But one thing for sure is, even though it has a massive crop. But the 4K is a lot sharper than the original M50 and M50 Mark II.
I’m not saying this camera is bad for video. You can still make beautiful 4K video. And there is always a work around. Like I said before, if the camera doesn’t have IBIS. Then use an IS lens. If the camera crops in while shooting 4K, use a speedbooster. The story telling is far more important.
The reason why I’m not recommending this camera for video shooting. It is not just the 4K crop. It is the usability. As the camera has less buttons. You would assume you can use the touch screen. But unfortunately this camera does not have a touch screen. So you can’t just tap the screen to change the settings and focus. And because it doesn’t have enough buttons. So a lot of times, I had to press 2 to 3 buttons just to bring up the aperture menu then you can scroll the f/stop dial. Plus there is no flip out screen. It makes video shooting even harder.
One thing I gotta say, the battery life on the R100 is insanely good. It last forever. I did the whole video with just one battery and it didn’t even drop one bar. That is very impressive. And also the camera doesn’t overheat at all. And if you put a good glass, you can still produce a very nice looking video.
