Hospitals across England are under unprecedented strain even before the festive season has properly begun, new figures reveal.
In the last week, nearly half a million people arrived at A&E departments and record numbers were admitted to hospital.
The government-set target of 95 percent of patients being seen within four hours was missed this week. Fewer than 90 percent were seen within that time - the lowest on record.
