(20 Nov 2020) Worshippers held Friday prayers at a mosque in the Aghdam region of Azerbaijan as they celebrated its handover from Armenian to Azerbaijani troops.
The handover followed last week's ceasefire which ended weeks of fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh between mainly-Christian Armenia and mainly-Muslim Azerbaijan.
The mosque, which was in a state of disrepair, had been under the control of ethnic Armenians since the end of a previous conflict in the 1990s.
Azerbaijani troops entered the Aghdam region earlier Friday in line with the ceasefire accord.
The truce, brokered by Russia, stipulated that Armenia hand over control of some areas it holds outside Nagorno-Karabakh's borders to Azerbaijan.
Nagorno-Karabakh lies within Azerbaijan but has been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces, backed by Armenia, since the end of the separatist war.
That war left not only Nagorno-Karabakh itself but substantial surrounding territory, including Aghdam, in Armenian hands.
The end of the latest fighting has been celebrated as a victory in Azerbaijan, but sparked mass protests in Armenia.
