Played on the MiSTer FPGA, this is a full deathless run of the Famicom version of Gradius 2. This game was unfortunately never localized to western regions.
This game doesn't try to be an exact port of the arcade game, but does a great job being a unique take with similar themes and familiar enemies. Like the arcade version, the game features 4 different weapon loadouts with players able to choose what matches their style best. I selected Type 2 (or B) because it is definitely the offensive powerhouse that deals the most damage. It has a slight weakness to enemies above and in front of you (with no 2-way bomb or upward double shot) but more than makes up for this by being able to level bosses before they can do much. The game also features a fairly generous in-game autofire, which is much appreciated by older players like me who don't want to mash.
As for downsides, I can't really complain about much. The flickering and slowdown in some areas (such as the crystal stage) is present on both the MiSTer's FPGA NES core and original hardware.
The game is fairly easy, as I was able to put together this no death run after about 3 or so hours of playing it. After beating the last boss "Gofer", the game starts a second loop like most other Gradius games. The second loop didn't get harder or change anything else, so I didn't see a reason to continue playing and uploading more of the same of what you see in Loop 1 in this run.
In order to get the sharpest pixels and highest video quality, I used the MiSTer's 5X scale mode which has to slightly crop some of the picture to fit everything on the screen. The top of the screen in this footage is missing a few lines, but I honestly I can't notice. Be sure to watch in 60fps in order to have the shield not disappear during gameplay. No cheats, save states, or external autofire were used.
Thank for watching, as always!
