Garcea and colleagues present a detailed case study of a musician and music teacher who had a tumor in a brain region known to support critical aspects of music function. The authors show that intraoperative direct electrical stimulation of the right posterior superior temporal gyrus during awake brain surgery selectively disrupted music but not language abilities. This video abstract shows how preoperative fMRI and intraoperative mapping were used to facilitate removal of the tumor while preserving the patient’s music abilities.
