🌲 Pine martens are now making a comeback across Britain and Ireland. In this video we share 3 top tips for confidently identifying a pine marten and telling them apart from other similar species.
Pine martens in Britain have historically faced persecution and habitat loss, but conservation efforts have led to their resurgence. These omnivores consume small mammals, birds, insects, and fruits and are primarily active during nighttime in woodlands, where they dwell in elevated cavities like hollow trees. With a territorial range of 2-30km2, finding them can be difficult in some areas.
Pine marten identification guide:
- Pine martens are similar in size to domestic cat.
- They have brown fur and a distinctive creamy-yellow bib on the throat and chest. The shape of the bib is unique to each animal, which means it’s possible to tell individuals apart in camera trap footage if they give the camera a good pose!
- Pine martens can be confused for polecats and mink. A key characteristic that differentiates them is the pine marten’s creamy-yellow bib. Pine martens also have a big, bushy tail in comparison to polecats and mink.
