Drone footage posted on May 5 shows explosions at the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, Ukraine, where soldiers and civilians continue to shelter from Russian attacks.
In a separate video released on Thursday, a commander in the Azov Battalion asked once more for help evacuating civilians and wounded soldiers at the massive Soviet-era complex. The battalion, a far-right paramilitary group absorbed into the Ukrainian National Guard, also uploaded this drone footage to their Twitter account. It shows smoke rising from a part of the industrial works close to the Sea of Azov. Multiple explosions can also be seen.
On Tuesday, the Ukrainian government announced that over 150 people had been evacuated from the steel plant as part of humanitarian efforts coordinated with the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross. The UN’s humanitarian coordinator Martin Griffiths said on Thursday that another convoy was headed toward the plant, hoping to evacuate additional civilians. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces have accused Russia of escalated attacks on Azovstal, where underground areas have allowed hundreds to hold out despite Russia capturing the remainder of the city.
