Benedictus de Spinoza, born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on November 24, 1632, was a philosopher of Portuguese-Jewish descent who is widely recognized as one of the most significant and groundbreaking thinkers of the Enlightenment. He is also known as Baruch Spinoza and is renowned for his contributions to modern biblical criticism, 17th-century Rationalism, and modern ideas about the self and the universe. Spinoza drew inspiration from various sources, including Stoicism, Jewish Rationalism, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Descartes, and other unorthodox religious thinkers of his time.
