The Labarthe Tunnel near Castlegar (BC), was historically part of the Columbia & Western Railway (C&WR) and predates the creation of the Arrow Lakes Reservoir. In the late 1960s when the Keenleyside Dam was created, parts of the C&WR had to be relocated upslope above the reservoir. The Labarthe Tunnel was cut off from the railway.
Nowadays, depending on the height of the reservoir, the tunnel can be exposed or completely flooded!
Luckily on this day in early September, the lake level was at an absolutely perfect level to kayak through the old rail tunnel.
