The Hunting Dog
They bred the Jack Russell Terrier as a hunter for foxes and other similar creatures. Exceptionally intelligent, sharp and full of energy, they are easy to train, but difficult to control. For the first time dog owner, they can be a real handful.
Even in none working dogs, their prey drive is something to behold. The Jack Russell is not safe to be around small animals, even cats will be a target for a JR.
The Jack Russell Temperament
While they can make wonderful companions, if not given adequate training and socialization from a very young age, their natural tendencies will always get the better of them.
Jack Russells may be a small, tremendously cute little dog, but they are high maintenance. And if they get bored, which they will if not exercised regularly, will quickly become destructive and aggressive.
People instantly recognize a Jack Russell. With that cocky, jaunty attitude and friendly mannerisms, they win people over every time. How many people who watched Frasier didn't fall in love with Eddie?
Jack Russells are a very difficult breed for the first time owner, as we spoke about earlier. One reason is the time needed to train and socialize them. They take a lot of effort and in fact, it never ends. There's no slacking of effort when you have a Jack Russell. Be prepared for this if you have fallen in love with the breed.
If you're looking for a calm, quiet life, this is not the dog for you. They are almost hyper, their personality is proactive, alert and into everything, all the time.
They bounce around like a pogo stick on steroids. They'll bounce off you, your furniture, your visitors, anything and everything they can. Even the smallest of noises will have them up and alert.
Believe me when I say, if you're not prepared for this, you're in for a rude awakening.
We also talked about their intelligence earlier. Jack Russells love to run, but they must have mental stimulation. Obedience trials, agility tests, these are great for a JR.
Jack Russell Living Requirements
They might be small dogs and people naturally think because of this the Jack Russell is at home in an apartment, but truly they aren't.
Living on a farm would suit them better. However, we can't all live on a farm, so if you have one in your apartment, remember about the constant exercise and mental stimulation. This is more important than ever if he lives in your apartment.
If you have socialized them early, they are usually OK around other dogs. But I wouldn't trust him around your cat. He's the kind of dog who needs a younger, more energetic owner who also loves exercise and long walks.
He's better with older children who have been taught how to respect a dog. Like most small dogs, they get irritated pretty quickly if they're pulled around by young children.
Jack Russell Health
They're a pretty healthy dog breed. As long as you pick a serious, respectable breeder. One who screens his breeding dogs regularly.
Jack Russells can be susceptible to loose kneecaps (patellar luxation), going deaf, and eye problems.
Jack Russell Care
While a Jack Russell is high maintenance in some areas, he's very much low maintenance with physical care.
Their coats barely need any grooming, a brush down once a week is more than enough. They do shed, but not profusely.
They don't have that doggy smell that drives you to give them regular baths. Jack Russells are diggers though. So they will come in covered in dirt.
And if it's been raining, and the ground is muddy, then you will want to give them a quick bath. But with them being so small, it's really not to big a deal.
Dental hygiene needs taking care of, as it does with all dogs. Get him used to a toothbrush from a very young age, or you might have issues getting the brush in his mouth. I said they were stubborn.
Conclusion
The Jack Russell is an amazing little dog. Full of attitude. He's an exceptionally intelligent and stubborn dog. You will need to be aware of all his personality traits if you are a first-time dog owner.
But you can compensate for some issues by early socialization and training with a qualified dog trainer's help.
He has an extremely high prey drive. And will chase and kill small creatures, including cats, if he catches one. Jack Russells are good with other dogs if you have socialized him around them from a young age. Older children are OK with a Jack, but younger children not so much.
