Satellite observations from current low earth and geostationary platforms are under-utilized in numerical weather prediction (NWP). NOAA and Google understand the need for accurate information and environmental intelligence, the value of Earth observations and weather forecasting for societal benefit, and the unlocked potential of AI to revolutionize the ways in which we analyze and predict the weather.
NOAA and Google have worked together to develop AI for improving analysis and prediction through the improved use of these satellite observations. The collaboration synergizes the expertise across the organizations related to remote sensing, data assimilation, numerical weather prediction, AI/ML, and cloud computing.
STAR develops critical software for the calibration of environmental satellite observations and their transformation into products and services for use in environmental earth-system monitoring and forecasting.
