Kevin Gray of Klaus Roofing Systems of Nashville is inspecting a roof in Chapmansboro, Tennessee. The roof is made of 3-tab roof shingles, which are not used anymore by high quality roofing contractors due to their low quality. You can see how the shingles on this roof have curled due to nails popping up from the decking.
A contractor who installed this roof used a round shank nails instead of ring shank nails. Ring shank nails are stronger and more powerful when attached, compared to round shank nails. They are used for decking, underlayment, siding, and roofing installations. The contractor wanted to take a shortcut and save a few bucks, so he used round shank nails instead.
Round shank nails are commonly used for everyday project at home, for framing or construction applications. They are the most economical option, but the downside of round shank nails is that they lose their strength when applied to wood due to wood contracting and expanding due to moisture, therefore they are not a suitable option for a roof installation.
If you’ve noticed round shank nails on your roof or nails popping up, curling the roof shingles, give us a call! We would be happy to come by and check it out for you!
