A guy at AR15.com posted a story of his shotgun blowing up while using wax slugs. I encourage you to read this first.
The shotgun was a Maveric (the econo-line from Mossberg). Some say he may have shot a squib (the primer didn't ignite the powder, but caused a barrel obstruction)
