Most modern vehicles have a layer of clear coat paint on top of their finish to protect the color coat from scratches, bonded contaminants, and other damage. Older finishes often have single stage paint, meaning the color coat is the top coat of paint. When polishing scratches and swirls out of single stage paint you want to use the least aggressive or abrasive approach that you can, to preserve as much of your paint as possible and avoid damage.
