One of the places we had on our itinerary in Jasper was the Valley of the Five Lakes. It is a popular tourist destination in Jasper and a favorite for those that enjoy hiking. The five lakes vary in colour with hue of green to blue. This colour is due to the glacial rock dust, special algae and other factors. The colours are most visible in the summer months and the lakes are covered in snow in winter. The area is accessible throughout the year but it is icy during the winter so you will need appropriate gears and it is
muddy in spring/fall. the Valley of the Five Lakes hike is a loop of approximately 4.5kms and will take 1.5 hours to 2 hours minimum to complete it.
The entire hike is scenic with mountains as your backdrop. You will hike though peaceful forest, boardwalk and open meadow area before arriving at the lakes. You can hike clockwise starting at the first lake, but we decided to do counter clockwise and started at the fifth lake and made our way to the first lake. The area is known for bear activity so be prepared with bear spray and stay in groups. In summer months it is fairly crowded so it is fairly safe in terms of bear attacks. But with popularity and crowds come lack of parking spots so do try to get there early to score a parking spot. The hike is of medium difficulty with some exposed rocks and tree roots through out. There were lots of ups and downs with some being more steeper with short inclines.
My personal favorites were lakes 3, 4 and 5 which were really bright in colours and are perfect for pictures. The fifth lake has a dock with crystal clear water where you can see bottom of the lake with clarity. The fourth lake is the brightest of all in my opinion with various shades of green and turquoise due to the depth of water. There are different areas around the lake where you can stop by for pictures. The third lake comes with the traditional Canadian red chairs where you can sit back relax and enjoy the view with beautiful lake. This is probably the best place for pictures between all the five lakes. The second and first lake are larger and has beautiful mountain backdrops. From here you make your way back to the parking area.
