"The contestants come out displaying their school''s theme. It is really beautiful. It is just a great party full of that jovial carioca (nickname for Rio residents) spirit, because we all know carioca loves to have fun and joke around. And to see these men dressed as women on stage, they are like modern-day jesters. We all are."

STORYLINE:
Nearly a dozen drag queens from Rio de Janeiro''s top samba schools strutted their stuff and showed off their carnival pride on Friday, at the annual Miss Gay City of Samba beauty pageant.
Dressed in the most outlandish of costumes the contestants danced to the beat of their samba school''s official parade song in a style inspired by their team''s chosen theme.
The night''s organisers, Milton Cunha and Luciano Costa said, the pageant began five years ago as a joke in order to entertain the thousands of people who work building floats, costumes and choreographies for carnival in the City of Samba.
"This party is designed for the carnival workers, it is a way for them to have fun before carnival begins" Costa said.
On stage, all types of characters, from flapper girls to flamenco dancers, entertained the hundreds of watching workshop staffers on Friday.
More than three-thousand people work at the City of Samba year-round preparing for the two days of carnival parades in the sambadrome.
The carnival begins on Sunday, 14 February.
