MASU (ます) forms of verbs are known as long forms, used in polite speech. Changing verbs from their short forms (casual forms) to long forms is very easy as long as you know the verb types and conjugation rules. Japanese use short forms of verbs among friends and family members, however, when talking to strangers or one's superiors, Japanese people would use polite speech. It is important to know both!
