It’s an evolving form of malware designed to encrypt files on a device, rendering any files and the systems that rely on them unusable. Criminals behind the attack then demand ransom in exchange for decryption. Ransomware often targets and threaten to sell or leak exfiltrated data or authentication information if the ransom is not paid.

Unfortunately, everything from the water we drink, our food production, healthcare, schools, and other national critical functions are major targets of cyber attacks. Cybercriminals are more likely to go after those who are more able to pay a larger ransom, but all organizations should implement an effective cybersecurity program to protect against cyber threats.

Maintain offline, encrypted backups of data and regularly test them. Additionally, regularly patch and update software and Operating Systems. This helps to protect you against the latest malware with the latest security patches. Be cautious when online, don’t connect to public Wifi networks or click on any suspicious links.

Do not pay the ransom. It only encourages and funds these attackers. Even if the ransom is paid, there is no guarantee that you will be able to regain access to your files. Consider requesting assistance from CISA; and local, state, or federal law enforcement (ie Federal Bureau of Investigation [FBI]).
