Florida is home to the world’s largest phosphate mine, and receptacle for one billion tons of radioactive phosphogypsum, the hazardous byproduct from turning mined phosphoric ore into fertilizer. And the problem is only growing. The industry now seeks to expand this land-altering practice by 50,000 acres, altering waterways, destroying habitat.
