Starting to renovate the bathroom and of course had to start on the ceiling to get rid of the horrid and dated Artex!! For those wondering, my artex is painted over.
Most vids on youtube will show you to use a steamer or to paint over with harsh chemicals, but I found this method far easier and just as effective.
I Found a great way of removing the artex from the ceiling ready for skimming to get it nice and smooth again!
Tools:
- Spray bottle with hot water and cap full of fabric softner (lenor etc.)
- Window scraper and spare blades (very cheap from screwfix and other diy stores, link below!)
Method:
- Spray the hot water and comfort mix generously on a small area of the ceiling (eg. 0.5m x 0.5m) to begin with
- Wait 3-5 minutes
- Hold the blade at around a 35deg angle and start scraping!
Note: It may take some practice to get the right angle but once you get the hang of it, the artex will come off nice and evenly without piercing the plasterboard underneath!
**Before remove Artex always have it professionally checked for any asbestos. My home was built in the late 90's and is free from any harmful asbestos**
