STORYLINE:
Exiled Tibetan leaders on Wednesday called on people not to celebrate the lunar new year, as a protest against Chinese repression in the region.
Hundreds of Tibetans demonstrated near the Chinese embassy in New Delhi, carrying flags and chanting anti-China slogans.
Exiles claim that Beijing's crackdown on dissent has led to the self-immolations of nearly two dozen Tibetans and deadly clashes with Chinese authorities.
"We are not celebrating the New Year because inside Tibet has become more crucial and too many self immolations, sacrificing their lives inside Tibet," said a member of Tibet's government in exile, Acharya Yeshi Phuntsok.
Instead of celebrating the new year, Tibetans are being urged to pray for those living under Chinese rule.
An overseas Tibet lobbying group said on Wednesday that tensions have been building in Tibet's capital Lhasa, with increased security and officials even making calls at individual Tibetan homes.
The Washington-based International Campaign for Tibet also said hundreds of Tibetans had been detained after returning from India, where they attended teachings by the Dalai Lama last month.
