There was a new study on fasting & muscle loss. Here is my opinion about this.
When you are fasting your body is going into a state of autophagy, in autophagy there is a break down, a detox process. Fasting goes after your stored sugar, which is in your liver, it’s in your muscle.
So when this study said fasting group of people lost muscle mass, that’s because of the breakdown of stored sugar in your muscle. Here is the key, this study did not say “what you break your fast matters”! On the other side of autophagy is mTOR, which build a cell and make it stronger specifically muscle. When you go into longer fasts you are breaking down, and when you break your fast, especially when you break it with protein you are building muscle.
It is this in and out of fasting and breaking your fast with protein that will give you lean strong muscle.
Science is always evolving; new hypothesis is always coming. Remember as you fast longer more and more healing switches get turned on.

-Fasting group lost more lean muscle mass
-Fasting group lost less fat mass
-No significant changes in insulin sensitivity
-Fasting didn’t result in any changes in gene expression of inflammation or Autophagy
