(4 Nov 2019) German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said Iran's latest step away from its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers risks "putting the entire agreement at risk".
Maas expressed Germany's disapproval of Iran's decision to operate twice as many advanced centrifuges, stating it is "unacceptable."
Speaking to reporters in Hungary, Maas said "we expect Iran to return to full compliance with its obligations."
Under the accord, Tehran agreed to limit its enrichment of uranium in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.
Iran has now broken through its stockpile and enrichment limitations to try to pressure Europe to offer it a new deal, more than a year since US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew America from the accord.
But since the deal collapsed, European nations have been unable to give Iran a way to help it sell its oil abroad as it faces renewed US sanctions.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, who hosted Maas' visit to Budapest, said Hungary supported the work of the EU nations involved in reaching a nuclear deal with Iran, and said it was important to continue negotiations with Iran and keep the deal alive in some way.
"Events in the Middle East also have a direct and practically immediate effect on European security," Szijjarto said.
