🇬🇧🇺🇸 Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) –emblematic composer of the time period between 1600 and 1900 during which the so-called ‘tonality’ was dominant in western art music– wrote this particular Suite for three trumpets, timpani, two oboes, strings and basso continuo. In ‘Air’, though, he solely used string instruments (first violins, second violins and violas) and continuo (in the recordings we usually hear the harpsichord or the organ and the lute or the theorbo supported by the viola da gamba or the bassoon) while the sound of the rest of the instruments remains silent.
POLIS Ensemble arranged the original score so that it can be played by the lyra, ney, qanoon, percussion set, lavta and double bass; these instruments themselves are initially structured in a way serving the sound and the genre of the so-called ‘modality’ of the music cultures met in the Eastern Mediterranean, North Africa and the Middle East.
The necessary alterations on paper and the way of performance on behalf of the band members reveal the universality of the great German composer as well as the technique and expressive wholeness of the instruments mentioned above.
The current recording took place in the exquisite foyer of the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus.
