CINCINNATI (WKRC) - The holiday season is in full swing and while that means Christmas Carols, eggnog and gifts under the tree, it also means scammers are looking to prey on innocent victims.
So, how you can keep yourself safe this time of year?
There are dangers of receiving bogus emails that ask for your personal information and there are those phony phone calls from supposed friends or relatives asking for money. Those are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to holiday scams.
The Better Business Bureau just released its “12 Dangers of Christmas” list and it's filled with a whole lot of naughty and not a bit of nice.
A new scam has picked up steam in the past few years: Here’s how it goes.
Several trusted companies will offer charming, personalized letters from none other than jolly old Saint Nick himself and those are legitimate (and really a sweet gesture) especially if you have small children.
But for scammers, where there's good will, there's a good way to get your information.
Don’t fret yet! Sandra Guile from the Better Business Bureau knows how to make sure your letter from Santa is authentic and not a scam.
"Who wouldn't love to get an email from Santa, especially if you have little ones,” said Sandra. ”Unfortunately, scammers like to do the same thing, but they're looking for something completely different. So look for a legitimate website that is offering this kind of service… go to your URL… your search engines and stuff like that… a different website altogether… instead of relying on what's in your inbox."
