Pyongyang counters S Korea broadcasts
North Korea has turned on loudspeakers in response to South Korea broadcasting anti-Pyongyang propaganda across the border. Seoul had restarted its transmissions after North Korea detonated what it said was a hydrogen bomb on Wednesday. The South said the nuclear test was a ‘grave violation’ of an agreement made between the two countries last year. South Korea had turned off the propaganda to ease tensions after the two sides exchanged fire in August.
China stops ‘circuit-breakers’
China has suspended its use of so-called trading ‘circuit breakers’ and re-opened its stock markets. The breakers had been used for the first time earlier this week, in an effort to stabilise markets after sharp drops. But critics said they’d led to stocks being sold off, rather than the markets being protected.
Meanwhile, China’s Central Bank has strengthened the yuan’s exchange rate against the dollar, after weakening it on Thursday to a five-year low. Japanese and Hong Kong indices rose after the announcements.
Bushfire destroys nearly 100 homes
At least three people are missing after a bushfire swept through the western town of Yarloop, destroying nearly 100 homes. It’s already burned an area of land equal to 60-thousand football fields. Meanwhile, Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology said last year was the country’s fifth-hottest on record, which had made controlling wildfires even more difficult.
Iceman’s bacteria gives migration hints
Bacteria found in the stomach of a mummified man has given scientists clues about human migration. Otzi the Iceman is 5,300 years old and was found in a European glacier in 1991. It’s believed he was killed in the Otztal Alps. Scientists say the strain of bacteria indicates it’s likely that people from Africa came to Europe in waves.
