On 2 November 2008 the Cuban diva Omara Portuondo sang
'Amame como soy' composed by Pedro Pablo Milanés Arias. By the way, it was a Cuban All Stars day, because world class pianist Jorge Luis Prats was also present. Prats called her “the most important singer of our culture”. Portuondo is an international icon best known as a member of the Buena Vista Social Club. This group introduced her to an even bigger audience in the United States and around the world.
This year Portuondo is celebrating her 90th birthday. But still going strong.
She recently completed her Ultimo Beso tour. Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca, who performed with Portuondo on the tour, said: "She's able to do any Afro-Cuban style, Latin jazz, jazz, boleros, traditional Cuban music, rumba. She's magical, intense, pure, strong. The audience ... the public ... they are crying, smiling, dancing. All the time, she's making jokes”.
