Genesis Chapter 34 recounts a significant event involving Jacob's daughter, Dinah. Here's a brief summary:
The chapter begins with Dinah, daughter of Leah and Jacob, going out to see the women of the region. Shechem, son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of the area, sees her and forcefully takes her, violating her. Afterwards, he falls in love with Dinah and asks his father, Hamor, to get her as his wife.
When Jacob hears about what happened to Dinah, he holds his peace until his sons return. Hamor approaches Jacob and his sons, proposing not just a marriage between Shechem and Dinah, but also intermarriages between their people. They suggest that Jacob's tribe can dwell in their land, trade, and own property there.
Dinah's brothers, filled with anger due to the disgrace brought upon their sister, devise a cunning plan. They agree to Hamor's proposal on one condition: every male in their city must be circumcised. Hamor and Shechem agree to this, thinking of the prosperous alliance and intermarriage.
While all the men of the city are weak from circumcision, two of Dinah's brothers, Simeon and Levi, attack the city and kill every male, including Hamor and Shechem. They take Dinah from Shechem's house and leave. Jacob's other sons loot the city, seizing their wealth, flocks, and women, in retaliation for Dinah's defilement.
Jacob criticizes Simeon and Levi for their actions, fearing retaliation from the surrounding tribes. However, they stand by their decision, refusing to let their sister be treated like a harlot. The chapter ends on this note of tension.
