In this video Registered Dietitian Abbey Sharp shares with us three of her favorite mid-day energizing snack recipes that are not only delicious but under 200 calories.
It's a pretty common occurrence to find yourself staring at the work vending machine somewhere between lunch and dinner struggling with the idea of eating a candy bar, or one of the other equally unhealthy options given to you. The bad news is that these types of snacks are not only loaded with calories they are also going to give you the wrong type of energy. Snacks like these that are rich in refined carbohydrates and sugar energize you quickly, leave you with a major sugar crash a short time later, and worst of all don't even satisfy your hunger long enough for you to make it to dinner.
Abbey suggests mid-day snack recipes that make sense. The key to successful snacking is planning ahead. These snack recipes are going to not only give you energy but they will also curb your appetite so you don't just plow right through a big bag of chips before it's time for a real meal. Abbey's first choice is yogurt and berries. She recommends 1/2 cup of plain fat-free Greek yogurt topped with half a cup of raspberries and a half an ounce of crushed almonds. These ingredients combined together give you protein, fiber, and good fats. This trifecta of foods obliterates those hunger cravings and gives your body what it needs to go on with the rest of day.
The next snack recipe on the list consists of three tablespoons of steel cut oats mixed with 3/4 of a cup of boiling water. Add in roughly 1/2 a tablespoon of almond butter and top with two tablespoons of fresh blueberries. This snack recipe also hits the three major needs to crush your hunger and leave you feeling satisfied. The final snack recipe Abbey suggests is chia pudding. Combine three tablespoons of chia seeds with 3/4 of a cup of almond milk and refrigerate overnight. In the morning simply top it off with some fresh figs. These three snack recipes should get you through the mid-day slump with flying colors and keep you at a safe distance from the vending machine.
As always, thank you for tuning in. You can find more healthy snack recipes at Abbey's blog, as well as a myriad of additional information fit for consumption by foodies everywhere.
