M577 APC
The M577 Mobile Command Post Carrier is a variant of the M113 APC and is easily identified by the taller rear compartment. This compartment allows occupants to stand inside the vehicle.
The M577 first entered service in 1963 and continues to serve in countries around the world including the United States and Canada.
The vehicle is equipped with a 4.2 KW gasoline powered generator on the front deck to provide extra power to the command post. When stationary a penthouse tent can be extended from the rear of the vehicle to connect to two or more other M577’s to form a larger command and control complex.
The M577 usually has a crew of five: Commander, Driver and the unit control officers and staff. The vehicle weighs 12 tonnes and has an operational range of 480 km. A 50 caliber machine gun can be operated from the Commanders hatch and the crew is protected by several layers of armour including 2mm of steel, 4mm of Kevlar and a 5mm foam (spall liner).
The rear compartment of the M577 is fitted with desks and map boards and a large number of radios. It is also often equipped with crypto gear and switchboards.
