Eye pain with headache can be because of ocular or non-ocular causes. When we say ocular, it is related to the eye. Non ocular is the other causes. When we say ocular causes, it could be a small foreign body beneath the lid, in a layer called the supratarsal area. It can be an infection, a mild infection of the cornea or the conjunctiva, or it can be inflammatory lesions of the cornea or conjunctiva. It could be quite severe as uveitis or what we call as the optic neuritis. So an eye pain should not be ignored. It could be as small as a conjunctivitis to something that is severe. So any eye pain with a headache needs to be evaluated by an ophthalmologist. When we say nonocular causes, the commonest are related to the nerves or related to stress and anxiety or related to migraine. Whatever be the reason, the first checkup is done on the eye. the eyes related causes are ruled out, if there are any causes, they are treated and then, subsequent treatment is given for the non-ocular causes. Very rarely a cause in the nose or in the brain can also reflect as unilateral or one eye is associated with headache. A simple examination of the eye after outing the drops, that is dilated fundus evaluation usually reveals the problem. Usually this one eye pain resolves with simple treatments. However some of the treatments needs a CT scan or an MRI scan and prolonged treatments. That’s the reason why even if there is minimal pain even in one eye or in both eyes, it is important to meet the ophthalmologist as early as possible.
