First listed on the US Army’s Table of Equipment as a “submachine gun”, the XM177E2 was an experimental gun that shortened the barrel length as well as the overall length of the M16A1 rifle. You may know this gun by its more common name; CAR-15.
The XM177E2 utilized a 12-inch barrel with a unique, long muzzle device that acted as a very effective flash hider as well as a noise abatement tool. The noise from the hard bark of the 5.56mm cartridge is pushed forward and away from the shooter’s face.
Despite being classified initially as a submachine gun, the XM177E2 was chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO like the M16A1 and it used the same magazines. Also, many of the parts were interchangeable with the parent rifle. The compact size and lighter weight made this gun a favorite with Special Operations units working in Southeast Asia during the 1960’s and 70’s.
For a melee weapon, we paired this carbine with the Nightedge knife from Blackhawk. The super sharp, combination plain/serrated edge blade is no longer in production but they can be had from aftermarket sites.
