Obed-Edom was a Gittite, which means he was from the city of Gath, located in Philistine territory. Despite being a Philistine, he played a significant role in Israelite history due to an event involving the Ark of the Covenant.
The story begins during the reign of King David, who had successfully captured Jerusalem and was eager to bring the Ark of the Covenant, which symbolized the presence of God, to Jerusalem, the capital city. However, during the first attempt to move the Ark, a tragic incident occurred. As the Ark was being transported on a cart pulled by oxen, one of the oxen stumbled, causing a man named Uzzah to reach out and steady the Ark. This action, though well-intentioned, was a direct violation of God’s commandments regarding the handling of the Ark, and Uzzah was struck dead as a result.
