Question by Patient:
Hi Dr. Sandeep, My uncle has been adviced Thoracotomy surgery for Lung Cancer! What are its Pros & Cons as well as Risks involved?
Reply by Dr. Sandeep,
Thoracotomy is the medical term for opening of the chest and doing surgery inside the chest. Traditionally this is how surgery for Lung Cancer was performed. Even today most of the Lung Cancer surgeries happen by this method. The problem with Lung Cancer is it is painful, because we are spreading the chest and pushing the ribs closer to each other. Many at times the ribs get fractured and we cut the ribs and remove them just because we don’t want to have fractured ribs poking into the lungs. As of today Thoracotomy can be considered and an obsolete surgery, the reason being, it is possible to perform most of the Lung Cancer Surgery by Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery or VATS. We don't need to fully open or pull the ribs apart. We don’t need to fracture the ribs. It is possible to use the camera and perform the surgery , very effectively, infact more effectively than open approach or Thoracotomy approach and get much better results than open surgery.
