Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo have launched a joint operation to defeat militants within the borders of the two countries. According to the Congolese government, Kampala and Kinshasa armies are setting up an operations hub in DR Congo’s east for the joint offensive. A delegation from the Ugandan Peoples Defence Force arrived in Beni in the DR Congo’s North Kivu province to build the military centre. This brings a new era of co-operation as the two countries were rivals during DR Congo’s civil wars. Though the war officially ended in 2003, relations between the two have been strained at times. Senior Research Consultant at the Institute for Security Studies, Dr David Zounmenou told SABC News both countries needed to also deal with the root cause if the rebel’s cause as a military option alone will not be enough.
