Amid the discussions at COP28, Fred Krupp, president of the U.S. Environmental Defense Fund, sheds light on the critical role of addressing methane emissions, deforestation and the collaborative efforts of major players like China and the U.S. in combating climate change. Krupp recognizes that deforestation, oil extraction and livestock agriculture are major culprits of methane emissions and explains that methane emissions trap 83 times more heat than carbon dioxide emissions. However, he takes solace in the fact that China and the U.S. have recognized the incipient threat of methane and have announced agreements on targeting methane emissions. Krupp says, "When both China and the U.S. make a commitment, it sets a good example on all problematic polluting gases."
