The Mother and Child Academic Hospital (MACAH) Foundation is a NPC established in Bloemfontein in 2017. Besides lobbying for a stand-alone mother and child academic hospital in central South Africa, another pillar in our mission statement is to create knowledge and awareness around, as well as to promote, the concept and importance of the “First 1000 days”.

The “first 1000 days” refers to the first 1000 days in any child’s life starting from conception to birth (270 days), and the first two years of life (365 days each).

Many life-long patterns of wellbeing and illness are predicted by what happens in these early years. Providing for effective and excellent early childhood health (physical and mental) and development is the most significant investment that any country can make. It is therefore important to focus on the pregnant mother and her offspring, assuring that they both enjoy excellent physical and mental health. By doing that, the trajectory of the children’s development could be altered so that they may have more successful, productive and fulfilling lives.
In this video, Prof André Venter provides more information on the "first 1000 days" concept and why we at the MACAH - Mother and Child Academic Hospital Foundation hold it so dear to our heart.
