2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale vs 2023 Jaguar E-PACE Comparison.
The 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale will inject some Italian blood into the fray of subcompact luxury crossovers. With sexy bodywork that's accentuated by Alfa Romeo's signature sharp-nosed face, the Tonale is sure to garner admiring looks. The company also promises that it'll be satisfying to drive, with a fully independent suspension and available adaptive dampers. Power comes from either a standard 256-hp turbo-four or a more powerful plug-in-hybrid powertrain with more than 30 miles of estimated all-electric range. Throw in the elevated driving position and standard all-wheel drive that SUV shoppers crave—as well as the potential for a high-powered Quadrifoglio model—and the 2023 Tonale is set to be a compelling new entry in a class that includes the BMW X1, the Mercedes-Benz GLA250, and the Volvo XC40.
What's New for 2023?
The Tonale debuted in concept form at the 2019 Geneva auto show. Now, Alfa has released official photos and information that give us a much better idea about what the new little Italian ute has to offer. The company says the Tonale will hit U.S. showrooms starting in the first quarter of 2023.
The 2023 Jaguar E-Pace subcompact luxury SUV has good things going for it, like the style and driving flair that comes with every new Jaguar. But it’s pricey for its class: The 2023 E-Pace starts at $48,000.
The big change to the Jaguar E-Pace this year is that there’s only one version offered. It used to be the second of three trim levels, so its starting price isn’t really a like-for-like comparison with those of rival vehicles. But even the Range Rover Evoque — sharing the E-Pace platform and not usually recognized as a bargain — is more affordable. And the German competition is even less expensive.
A potential buyer really has to want a 2023 E-Pace instead of anything else, then. And that’s OK. The E-Pace can also be considered a less obvious choice among small luxury SUVs.
2023 Jaguar E-PACE Pricing
There’s just one version of the Jaguar E-Pace SUV on sale this year, the P250 SE. Its manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) is $48,000, plus a destination charge. Adding options could push that figure a few thousand higher, not including $2,150 for a set of 21-inch alloy wheels finished in gloss black.
For comparison, a Range Rover Evoque starts at about $45K. The Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, and Volvo XC40 are in the mid-to-high-$30K range. And a BMW X2 with all-wheel drive is nearly $39K. Admittedly, the 2023 E-Pace starts out with a higher level of standard equipment, but these are tempting alternatives.

Driving The 2023 Jaguar E-PACE
In its standard state, the 2023 E-Pace SUV is still a pleasure to drive. The turbocharged 2.0-liter engine is sufficiently muscular, and the suspension blends comfort with control in that special flowing Jaguar way.
The configurable and adaptive dynamics options don’t add more power, but improve the driving experience in other ways. Configurable dynamics are really just a combination of settings the driver can select, determining responses of the throttle, transmission, and steering.
Adaptive dynamics involves, no surprise, an adaptive suspension that reacts automatically to conditions from moment to moment. However, it also allows drivers to toggle between modes like Comfort and Sport. You get these systems either through the Dynamic Handling or the Premium Black packages.
