○ Werkeinführung
London zeichnete sich im 18. Jahrhundert durch ein einzigartiges, von Aristokratie und Bürgertum getragenes Musikleben aus. Viele Künstler:innen strömten, angelockt von den Möglichkeiten des öffentlichen Konzerts, vom europäischen Kontinent in die englische Metropole. Mit offenen Armen empfing man insbesondere Musiker: innen, die aus Europas Musikland Nummer eins – Italien – kamen.
Auch Georg Friedrich Händel zog es 1712 nach London, vorher hatte er sich während eines Italien-Aufenthalts mit den neuesten musikalischen Trends vertraut gemacht. Im Bereich der Orchestermusik sorgte zu dieser Zeit gerade das Concerto grosso für großes Aufsehen.
Gemeint ist damit eine Konzertform, bei dem das großbesetzte Orchester – genannt Tutti oder Ripieno – gegen wenige Solist:innen, das Concertino, antritt. In Rom lernte Händel sowohl diese neue musikalische Gattung als auch ihren wichtigsten Vertreter, den Geigenvirtuosen, Komponisten und Orchesterleiter Arcangelo Corelli, kennen. Er übertrug das Prinzip der Doppelchörigkeit, also das wechselseitige Musizieren in alter venezianischer Tradition, auf die
Musik für Streichorchester. Obwohl Corelli nur sechs Werkgruppen veröffentlichte, eilte ihm schon zu Lebzeiten der Ruf eines Pioniers voraus. Seine 12 Concerti grossi op. 6, 1714 posthum in Amsterdam erschienen, wurden als klassischer Maßstab italienischer Konzertmusik angesehen und von großen Komponisten des 18. Jahrhunderts zum Vorbild genommen – darunter Bach, Vivaldi, Geminiani und Händel.
Auch in London bestimmte Corellis Musik über Jahrzehnte die Konzertprogramme, mitunter in überraschenden Arrangements und Besetzungen. Auf diesen Markt zielten Georg Friedrich Händel und sein Verleger Walsh: 1734 gaben sie die Concerti grossi op. 3 und 1739 die »Twelve Grand Concertos« op. 6 heraus. Händel suchte mit der zweiten Sammlung op. 6 den direkten Vergleich zu Corellis tonangebenden Konzerten gleicher Opuszahl. Mit diesen teilen sie die Instrumentierung (Concertino: zwei Violinen und Cello) und die stilistische Ausrichtung. Den reinen Streicherklang der Concerti op. 6 ergänzte Händel in op. 3 durch Solo-Oboen. Im Allgemeinen kannte das Concerto grosso keine Norm: es konnte wie in den Konzerten von Vivaldi dreisätzig ausfallen oder wie bei der Kirchen- und Kammersonate bis zu vier und mehr Sätze aufweisen. Wie Händels
Concerto op. 3 beweist, zeigte sich der Komponist darüber hinaus offen für Einflüsse der Suite, die Tanzsätze aneinanderreiht – im Concerto Nr. 2 sind das eine Sarabande (1. Satz) und eine Gavotte
(5. Satz). Tänzerische Heiterkeit verströmt auch das Concerto op. 6 Nr. 7 z. B. im fünften Satz »Hornpipe« (ursprünglich der Name eines Blasinstruments), der von den Rhythmen eines altenglischen Liedes inspiriert ist.
