The conference “Future steps to tackle obesity – digital innovations into policy and actions” was co-organized by the Portuguese Presidency of the EU Council, in particular the Portuguese Ministry of Health, jointly with the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe. The widespread use of digital world in late modernity is now rising the awareness regarding the digital food environment, namely concerning the prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). During this Conference, the opportunities and threats created by the digital world in obesity prevention policies and actions were discussed.

The panel “Different approaches in EU and impact on obesity: voluntary Vs regulation and how it can influence adult and childhood obesity” addressed the legal challenges of marketing restrictions and the digital misinformation. Additionally, the panel explored new approaches, namely online age verification tools and innovative monitoring frameworks, in the scope of reducing children’s exposure to unhealthy food marketing.
