Enigma is a German electronic musical project created by Michael Cretu in 1990. Cretu conceived the Enigma project while he was working in Germany, although he decided to locate recording studios A.R.T. Studios on the island of Ibiza (Spain) from the early 1990s until May 2009, where he recorded all of Enigma's studio albums. Cretu is both the composer and the producer of the project. Her ex-wife, singer Sandra, had vocally collaborated on some songs from Enigma's albums. Jens Gad participated as a co-rector and also as guitarist on three of Enigma's albums. Peter Cornelius also contributed to Enigma during the 1990s.
Eight studio albums have been produced under the name of the project.
Cretu had been one of the first people to build a private digital recording studio at home, and to include vocal samples and non-percussive musical elements in his recordings, such as Gregorian chants and the shakuhachi flute.
Enigma went on to sell more than 70 million records worldwide, so it received more than one hundred gold and platinum record certifications. The musical project also received three Grammy nominations and was considered one of the most successful musical projects.
