Episode 2: Coach Nicholas Askew
For Black History Month, our episode of Matters of Inclusion welcomes Coach Nicholas Askew, from the Howard University Swimming & Diving, and Tennis teams, for a discussion about making history in the pool.
Nicholas Askew is the Howard University Bisons Director of Swimming & Diving, and Tennis. He has the distinction of being the only Howard University student-athlete to earn an MVP award in two sports in the same year.
By the time he was seven years old, he was already competing in swimming and tennis. He was chosen Athlete of the Year following an impressive high school career. In 1996, after receiving several scholarship offers for swimming and tennis from several universities, Askew chose Howard University.
During his time as a dual-sport student-athlete, Askew broke several swimming records, served as team captain, and became a six-time conference champion. He also acquired the “Most Valuable Player” award four times–three times for swimming and once for tennis, and has the distinction of being the only student-athlete to have earned an MVP award in two sports in the same year. In 2001, he became an assistant coach at his alma mater, helping to recruit top talent.
In 2023, the Bisons Men's Swimming & Diving team won the school’s first-ever NCAA Northeast Conference championship title.
