On behalf of NATO, the Bundeswehr’s air force protects the airspace above Germany. 365 days a year, two QRA Squadrons are on call around the clock, one in the north and one in the south - because the airspace over Germany is a sensitive area yet extremely busy with commercial air traffic. It needs special protection.
74th Wing, Tactical Airforce stationed in Neuburg on the Donau river is responsible for the protection of the southern skies.
The QRA, short for Quick Reaction Alert, consist of two Eurofighter jets, the pilots and technicians on the ground.
The QRA is on constant alert and needs to be able to scramble within 15 minutes.
